Go ahead. Open ChatGPT, or Google's AI answer, or Perplexity, and type: "Who is the best [what you do] in [your city]?"

Take your time. We'll be here.

If you came up, congratulations. Read what it said about you, because your next client just read the same thing. If you didn't come up, you've met your real competition. They may not be better than you. They're easier to describe, which, to a machine, is the same thing.

Why AI recommends who it recommends

AI tools are not impressed by your logo. They want a business they can describe with confidence: what it does, who it serves, where it is, and whether anyone else agrees. If your website says one thing, your Google profile says another, and your Facebook page was last updated in 2019, the AI shrugs and recommends someone tidier.

Word of mouth still works. The mouth just belongs to a machine now.

Four things to do this week

1. Ask three questions. Ask each AI tool who's best in your field, who's best for your ideal client, and what it knows about your business by name. Screenshot everything. You'll want it later.

2. Make your name match everywhere. Same name, address, phone number, and description on your website, your Google profile, and every social page. Down to the comma. Machines are literal.

3. Say plainly what you do. Somewhere on your homepage, write one sentence a stranger could repeat: "We are a [type of business] serving [type of client] in [city]." An AI can't recommend what it can't summarize.

4. Ask for better reviews. "Great service!" tells a machine nothing. Ask happy clients to say what you did for them and where. Those are the details AI repeats.

“Word of mouth still works. The mouth just belongs to a machine now.”

A small confession

Do all four and you'll have completed roughly the first week of what we do for clients. The other 51 are less glamorous. They involve watching how the answers change, figuring out why, and adjusting before your competitor notices.

You also just searched for yourself on purpose, in daylight. That's growth.
